The story of Portland Head is legand. The head was an lookout in 1776. The light was Federal infrastructure commissioned by President Washington and funded by the first congress. Important during Civil War. Endured northeasters, hurricanes and the “Perfect Storm”. Inspiration for artists and poets over the centuries and more recently for photographers. “Portland Head and its light seem to symbolize the state of Maine – rocky coast, breaking waves, sparkling water and clear, pure salt air” – Edward Rowe Snow, Historian. My impression is early light at enduring light.
