This old traffic signal and bird nest caught my attention while touring the south side of Kauai. The signal used to control traffic through a sugar cane plantation; where big truck running from the dusty fields to the processing facility crossed the main road heading north towards the mountains from Waimea. The nest is one of the only signs of life to be found around this once flourishing sugar cane operation, now deserted. I find bird nests in manmade things like old bridges; first time for me to find evidence of winged squatters in a broken traffic signal – creative reuse by nature. In Hawaii the expression for squatters is “making home”.
