This bridge is formally the Admiral Clarey Bridge – named for a highly decorated WWII submariner who later served as the Pacific Fleet Commander at Pearl Harbor. The bridge is a causeway bridge with a pontoon section that can be retracted to allow water traffic to pass through. Immediately adjacent to the bridge is the USS Bowfin – a WWII attack class submarine known as the “Pearl Harbor Avenger.” The boat was launched on December 7, 1942, exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor and sank a number of enemy ships. Now permanently homeported at Pearl Harbor next to the bridge that bears the name of a famous submariner.
